We had a great first week back at school and the children were very excited about the impending snow. :) In January, I enjoy doing a week of shared reading/writing experiences about penguins. The children really like learning about them.
We focused mainly on nonfiction literature. Monday we worked as a class to complete a KWL chart about penguins. KWL stands for K (what the children already know), W (what the children want to learn), and L (what the children did learn). The book focused on Emperor penguins, but did include other types as well.

We also discussed warm weather penguins using the book Pierre the Penguin. It is such a cute story and the children were able to watch a live video feed of the same type of penguin residing in California. During writing the children created a class list of describing words for Pierre. Our focus for this writing activity was generating sentences with different beginnings. |
We watched a Brainpop Jr video about fractions.
We worked with "fraction pizzas" and did a Promethean board activity for equal parts.
In science, the children started earning about natural resources, various forms of pollution, and the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). I read a book about identifying natural resources and later in the week we did an experiment with "Freddy the fish". In the experiment, Freddy started with a fresh water source, but after soil erosion, littering, and a chemical and oil spill he could no longer survive in his envoronment. This experiment is meant to illustrate the negative aspects of pollution |
Mr. Lacy came and did a lesson with the children about the tools people need for various careers. As always, the children enjoyed his visit.
